Which ayanamsa is used?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the ayanamsa used by the Indian government calendar and by most Indian almanacs. Planetary positions come from a VSOP87 and ELP astronomical ephemeris and are then converted to the sidereal zodiac, rather than being looked up in a table.
Which house system does the chart use?
Whole sign houses, as North Indian practice reads them: the sign containing the ascendant is the first house in full, and each following sign is the next house.
What if I do not know my exact birth time?
You can generate the chart without it. It is then cast from noon, which leaves the planetary positions, moon sign, nakshatra and Vimshottari dasha reliable, but not the ascendant or the house positions — those move through all twelve signs in a day.
What is a Vimshottari dasha?
A 120-year cycle in which each of nine planets governs a stretch of life in a fixed order and for a fixed length. Which planet you start in, and how much of that first period remains at birth, is decided by the exact position of the Moon within its nakshatra.
