The Magic of Amalaki (Amla)

Falling between Maha Shivaratri and Holi, Amalaki Ekadashi holds immense spiritual and Ayurvedic significance. According to the Padma Purana, Lord Brahma manifested from Lord Vishnu's navel, and the Amla tree manifested from Lord Vishnu's tears. Therefore, the Amla tree is considered the abode of all Gods. Fasting on this day yields the merit of donating 1000 cows.

ЁЯУЬ Amalaki Ekadashi Vrat Katha

According to ancient texts, there was a prosperous kingdom ruled by King Chaitraratha, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. In his kingdom, everyone strictly observed the Ekadashi fasts.

Once, on Amalaki Ekadashi, the King, along with his subjects, was performing the night vigil (Jagran) and Puja at a temple near an Amla tree. A hungry and sinful hunter arrived there. Despite his evil nature, he stayed awake the entire night, watching the beautiful devotion and listening to the prayers, while waiting for food.

The next morning, the hunter went home, ate, and eventually died some days later. Because he unknowingly observed the Amalaki Ekadashi Jagran and fast, all his sins were washed away. In his next birth, he was reborn as King VasurathaтАФa powerful, righteous, and wealthy king.

Moral: Even if observed unknowingly, the Amalaki Ekadashi fast destroys all sins and grants Moksha (Salvation).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Amla used specifically on this Ekadashi?
According to the scriptures, the Amla (Indian Gooseberry) tree originated from the tears of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Lord Vishnu resides at the base of the tree, Lord Brahma in the upper part, and Lord Shiva in the branches. Eating, touching, and worshipping Amla on this day destroys all sins.
What is the Parana time for Amalaki Ekadashi 2026?
The fast must be broken (Parana) on the next day, which is Sunday, March 1, 2026, between 06:45 AM and 09:00 AM, before the end of the Dwadashi Tithi.
Can we eat Amla during the fast?
Yes! Amalaki Ekadashi is unique because it emphasizes the use of Amla in all forms. You can bathe with Amla water, worship the Amla tree, offer Amla to the Lord, and consume Amla as Prasad during the fast.
What should be avoided on Amalaki Ekadashi?
Like all Ekadashis, consuming rice, wheat, lentils, onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food is strictly prohibited. One should also avoid anger, lying, and sleeping during the day. Plucking leaves from the Amla tree on this day is also forbidden; pick them a day earlier if needed.
What if I don't have an Amla tree nearby?
If you cannot find an Amla tree, you can place an Amla fruit or a small branch of the tree next to the idol of Lord Vishnu in your home temple and perform the puja with pure devotion. The spiritual merit remains the same.
