The Departure
On Dwitiya, Lord Jagannath, along with Sister Subhadra and Brother Balabhadra, departs for his aunt's house (Gundicha Temple). Before leaving, he promises his wife, Goddess Lakshmi, that he will return the very next day.
The Restless Wait
When four days pass and the Lord still does not return, Goddess Lakshmi becomes restless and deeply upset. On the 5th day, unable to bear the separation, she mounts a grand palanquin in a fit of divine anger to find him.

The procession of Goddess Lakshmi is a grand, theatrical event filled with immense devotion from the Sevayats (temple servants) and the devotees.

- 1. Shringaar & Palanquin (पालकी पर प्रस्थान) मंदिर के अंदर विधि-विधान के साथ महालक्ष्मी का श्रृंगार किया जाता है। She is then placed on a beautiful palanquin beneath the Banyan tree in the southeastern part of the temple.
- 2. The Angry Procession (महालक्ष्मी की जयकार) Palanquin bearers carry her on their shoulders. पूरे रास्ते ड्रम, घंटियों, और शंख की ध्वनि गूंजती है। The women walking behind sing special Hera Panchami songs that express the Goddess's complaints (उलाहना) and anger.
