Hera Panchami 2026: When Goddess Lakshmi Broke the Chariot
Key Takeaway
Hera Panchami is celebrated on the 5th day of the Puri Rathyatra. 'Hera' means to search. When Lord Jagannath does not return to the main temple after 4 days as promised, an angry Goddess Lakshmi travels to the Gundicha Temple on a palanquin to find him. Devotees sing songs of her anger. After performing Aarti, she symbolically orders her servants to break a part of Lord Jagannath's chariot (Nandighosha) out of frustration, before returning alone. In 2026, it will be celebrated on July 18.

💔 1. The Broken Promise: Why was She Angry?
The story behind Hera Panchami perfectly captures the essence of a sweet and sour marital relationship
The Departure
On Dwitiya, Lord Jagannath, along with Sister Subhadra and Brother Balabhadra, departs for his aunt's house (Gundicha Temple). Before leaving, he promises his wife, Goddess Lakshmi, that he will return the very next day.
The Restless Wait
When four days pass and the Lord still does not return, Goddess Lakshmi becomes restless and deeply upset. On the 5th day, unable to bear the separation, she mounts a grand palanquin in a fit of divine anger to find him.
🏛️ 2. The Majestic Rituals at Gundicha Temple
The procession of Goddess Lakshmi is a grand, theatrical event filled with immense devotion from the Sevayats (temple servants) and the devotees.
✨ The Sequence of Events
She is then placed on a beautiful palanquin beneath the Banyan tree in the southeastern part of the temple.
- 2. The Angry Procession (महालक्ष्मी की जयकार) Palanquin bearers carry her on their shoulders. The women walking behind sing special Hera Panchami songs that express the Goddess's complaints (उलाहना) and anger.
- 3. The Divine Meeting (आरती और दही का भोग) At the Gundicha Temple, her palanquin halts near Lord Jagannath's chariot. The head priest brings a garland from Lord Jagannath and offers it to Goddess Lakshmi to pacify her. She is then taken inside, offered curd (दही), and her Aarti is performed in front of the Lord.
⚡ 3. The Climax: Breaking the Chariot
Despite the prayers and offerings, Goddess Lakshmi insists that Lord Jagannath return immediately. When she realizes he is not ready to leave his aunt's house yet, her anger peaks.
The Vengeance of Love
She hides behind a tamarind tree, watches her servants break a small piece of wood from the grand chariot to teach her husband a lesson, and then returns to the main Jagannath temple alone, filled with pride and anger!
